Make the best of a bad lie

If you find you have driven in to some heavy rough, unless you have an unusually good lie, always avoid the temptation of trying to blast your ball straight onto the green with a long iron or a utility club.

It is more than likely that such a shot will get you into even deeper trouble somewhere so the smart play is to take out a short iron and put yourself back on the fairway in a spot from where you know you can find the green.

At worst you'll get a bogey. At best, save from holing out, a one putt finish will give you a saving par
