Always grass before mats

If your have a choice of practising on real grass or mats at a driving range, always opt for grass.
Mats tend to let you club bounce into the ball and often give you a false sense of success, flying further and higher than it would had it been played off a turf surface.
This can also teach you to swing too shallow when you get out on the course.
If you must hit off mats, you should concentrate on hitting the ball first before your club comes in contact with the mat.
